What is Overleaf?
Overleaf is a cloud-based collaborative LaTeX editor used to write, edit, and publish scientific documents. For more information, visit www.overleaf.com.
What does Writefull for Overleaf do?
Writefull for Overleaf makes your writing in Overleaf faster, easier, and more accurate. It offers highly advanced language feedback and LaTeX writing features directly within the Overleaf editor. The language feedback comes from Writefull’s language models and is specifically tuned for LaTeX. The feature set is extensive, including TeXGPT to provide you with instant help with LaTeX, a Table and Equation Generator to automatically generate LaTeX code for tables and equations, and Context Options within the text that allow you to refine or rewrite any selected text. The Chrome extension stopped working. What should I do?
The Chrome extension has been disabled because Writefull and Overleaf have been fully integrated, meaning you no longer need to download an extension or create an account to use Writefull in Overleaf. You can activate Writefull within Overleaf directly from your account settings page (scroll down to “Integrations”).
Your Overleaf credentials will be used to log in. If you have a Premium Writefull account with an email address different from your Overleaf one, make sure to add that Writefull-associated email address to the email list within your Overleaf settings. Feel free to contact us at support@writefull.com if you encounter any issues.
How do I add Writefull to Overleaf?
You can enable Writefull from the Account Settings page in Overleaf. Scroll down to the “Integrations” section and click the toggle to activate Writefull. Your Overleaf credentials will be used to access Writefull.
How do I use Writefull for Overleaf?
You can find an explanation of how to use Writefull for Overleaf in the dedicated user guide here (in English). The guide can also be accessed from the Writefull menu within Overleaf.
What does a Premium plan offer compared to a free one?
A Premium subscription gives you full access to Writefull for Overleaf, Writefull for Word, and Writefull X. While the free version has a daily quota for language suggestions and writing features, with a Premium account you unlock unlimited suggestions and features (fair use policy applies), as well as the ability to customise the GPT language corrections with your own prompt. Premium features differ slightly between Writefull for Overleaf and Word. Learn more about Premium access across all Writefull products here.
I see a message saying I have reached my quota. What does this mean?
It means you have reached your usage limit of Writefull through language suggestions or AI writing features. You can wait for your quota to reset or upgrade to Premium for unlimited use.
In the case of UPM, you should not see this message. If you do, contact us for assistance.
Can I block language suggestions that I don’t like?
Yes. If you are not satisfied with a language suggestion, click the ban icon at the bottom of the suggestion card. This will add it to your personal “Blocked Edits” list and prevent Writefull from suggesting it again. You can find your blocked edits in your personal account at my.writefull.com/login. There, click on “Manage blocked edits”. Make sure to refresh Overleaf afterwards to apply the changes.
What is the integrated version of Writefull for Overleaf?
Until recently, Writefull could only be used in Overleaf via a browser extension. Today, Overleaf has integrated Writefull directly into its editor, making it available to all users without the need to install extensions or create a separate account. We recommend using this version, as the extension will be withdrawn soon.
What data does Overleaf share with Writefull?
When you use the integrated version of Writefull, your email address and user ID are shared with Writefull to link your Overleaf account with an existing Writefull account (if the email matches) or to automatically create a new one. Once enabled, Writefull will have access to the content of any file you open in order to provide suggestions.
What happens to the texts I process with Writefull for Overleaf?
Your privacy is fundamental to Writefull:
- Writefull never stores your text nor uses it to train its AI; the models are trained on published articles.
- If you use a feature that requires a third-party service, your text may be temporarily stored there, but never for training.
- You are always informed when a third-party service is involved and must give your explicit consent.
- Your data is never sold or used for advertising purposes.
What AI is used in Writefull for Overleaf?
By default, the language feedback comes from Writefull’s own models, trained on published articles and tuned for LaTeX. The Summary and Title Generator also uses proprietary models. Writefull does not store your text nor use it for training.
From the menu, you can switch to GPT to receive feedback on non-academic texts or in other languages. The following features also use GPT: TeXGPT, Table Generator, Equation Generator, Paraphrase, Change Style, Split/Merge, Summarise, and Explain. This means the text you select is sent to OpenAI’s servers (where it is retained for up to 30 days and not used for training). You will be notified on first use and can decide whether to use these features.
Do I have control over which AI I use in Writefull for Overleaf?
Yes, you have full control over how and when you use AI features:
- You decide when Writefull reviews your text (you can enable or disable the review from the menu).
- You choose the level of AI assistance: language review only, rewriting, or generation.
- You choose which AI to use: Writefull’s own or third-party (OpenAI or Anthropic). You will always receive a notification before using features involving external services.
What AI is used for language review in Writefull for Overleaf?
By default, Writefull’s language model is active. You can switch to GPT if you want to review non-academic texts or texts in other languages. Upon first use, you will be informed that this feature uses OpenAI’s GPT service and that your text will be shared with OpenAI. You must accept these terms to continue.
Why use Writefull for Overleaf and not ChatGPT or another similar service?
The differences are:
- Data privacy: Writefull uses the GPT API platform, not ChatGPT. While ChatGPT trains its models with user content by default, the API platform does not use data for training and only stores it for a maximum of 30 days. This applies to both GPT and Anthropic.
- Adaptation: Writefull uses customised prompts to ensure outputs are suitable for academic writing in LaTeX.
- Convenience: You don’t need to switch between tabs. You can adapt text, ask the AI for help, or generate code directly within Overleaf.
- Context awareness: Some features consider the surrounding context. For example, the “Explain” function uses a larger portion of the user’s text to explain a selected word or phrase.
