The Universidad Pilitécnica de Madrid (UPM) was founded in 1971 with the integration of the Higher Technical Schools that until then formed the Higher Polytechnic Institute. The following year, the University Schools were added.
However, the origin of the institution dates back much further. The teaching at most of the Centres began during the reign of Charles III, in the 18th century, and for many years, these Schools were practically the only ones in our country linked to the teaching of Architecture and Engineering.
