What does Writefull for Word do?
Writefull for Word provides advanced language feedback and AI writing tools directly within Word. The language edits are powered by Writefull’s proprietary models, trained on published research articles, making them ideal for academic writing. In addition to language edits, the AI writing features allow you to rewrite your text: whether by paraphrasing it, making it more concise, scientific, impactful, or splitting and joining sentences. You can also generate summaries or titles, and explain or summarise content. Finally, Writefull for Word includes Ask AI, an assistant that answers all your writing-related questions.
How do I use Writefull for Word?
You can find a detailed explanation of how to use Writefull for Word in the official user guide (in English).
How do I install Writefull for Word and create an account?
We recommend installing it as an add-in from within Word itself. You can install it on both the desktop client and the web client.
You can authenticate either with a Writefull account (sign in if you already have one or register if you don’t). You can also sign in to Writefull via Overleaf.
Which versions of Word are compatible with Writefull for Word?
For Windows, Writefull for Word is compatible with Microsoft Office 2016 or later. For Word Online and Mac OS, Writefull for Word can be used with Microsoft Office 365 (including Word Online) and Office 2016 or later. If you have an older version of Office (prior to 2016), you will need to download the legacy version of Writefull for Word from here.
That is, you can use it with the UPM versions of Word, both web and desktop.
I see a message saying I have reached my quota. What does that mean?
It means you have reached your usage limit for Writefull when using language suggestions or AI writing features. You can wait for your quota to reset or upgrade to Premium for unlimited use.
Since you will have a Premium licence at UPM, you should not see this message. If you do, contact us so we can assist you.
Can I block language suggestions I don’t like?
Yes, if you are not satisfied with a language suggestion given by Writefull, hold down the SHIFT key while clicking on the suggestion in the card. This will add it to your personal “Blocked Edits” list and prevent Writefull from suggesting that change again. You can find your blocked edits in your personal Writefull account at https://my.writefull.com/login. On your account page, click the button that says “Manage blocked edits”.
What does the Premium version offer compared to the free one?
A Premium subscription gives you full access to Writefull for Word, Writefull for Overleaf, and Writefull X. While the free version has a daily quota for language suggestions and writing features, with a Premium account you unlock unlimited suggestions and features (fair use policy applies). The Premium features differ slightly between Writefull for Word and Overleaf.
Can I get Premium access to Writefull for Word through my institution?
Yes, you can! UPM offers Premium access.
What is “Ask AI”?
Ask AI is a writing assistant in Writefull for Word. It has been developed to answer any questions you may have while writing. It responds from a researcher’s perspective, making its answers more relevant and reliable than, for example, ChatGPT’s. Having Ask AI inside Word means you don’t need to leave your writing environment when a question arises. You can ask questions freely or select a word or passage to ask about; for example, select your Conclusion and ask how you could make it more convincing, or select a passage with statistics and ask if anything in the report is unclear.
What happens to the texts I process with Writefull for Word?
Your privacy is fundamental to Writefull’s design. In the company’s own words:
- We never store your text nor use it to train our AI; we train our models with published articles.
- If you use a feature that requires third-party services, your text may be temporarily stored by that provider, but it is never used for training.
- You are always informed when a third party is involved and must give your explicit consent before your text can be sent to their servers.
- Your data is never sold or shared for advertising purposes.
Do I have control over which AI I use in Writefull for Word?
Yes, you have full control over how and when you use AI features:
- You decide when Writefull checks your text: it is only processed when you click “Check Document” or “Check Paragraph”.
- The level of AI support depends on you: from language checking to rewriting or text generation.
- You decide which AI to use: Writefull’s or a third party’s. Some features use the OpenAI and Anthropic APIs. You will always be notified before using features with external services.
Why use Writefull for Word and not ChatGPT or another similar service?
The differences are:
- Privacy: Writefull uses the GPT API platform, not ChatGPT. While ChatGPT by default trains with user content, the API platform does not use data for training and only stores information for a maximum of 30 days.
- Adaptation: We use customised prompts to ensure outputs are suitable for academic writing. The AskAI and TeXGPT features respond from a researcher’s perspective.
- Convenience: You don’t need to switch tabs. You can adapt text, ask the AI questions, generate text or code, and add it directly into your document.
- Context awareness: Some features use surrounding text. For example, the “Explain” feature uses a larger portion of text to explain a selected word or phrase.
Which AI is used for language checking in Writefull for Word?
Writefull for Word offers language feedback using Writefull’s own models. These have been trained on published articles and provide high-quality suggestions tailored to academic writing. For more information about which AI is used and how to use it responsibly, see the Responsible AI section on this page.
